General description
The house fly is one of the most common pests in Puerto Rico. It reproduces quickly and is attracted to garbage, organic residue, and exposed food.
Characteristics
- Average size of 6 to 7 mm.
- Gray color with dark lines on the thorax.
- Prominent compound eyes.
- High mobility and dispersal capacity.
Life cycle
- Its life cycle can be short, so a small issue can turn into an infestation.
- Eggs are deposited on moist organic matter.
- Larvae (maggots) emerge quickly.
- Pupa and then adult in just a few days, even faster in heat and humidity.

- Contamination of food and surfaces.
- Mechanical transport of bacteria from garbage or feces.
- Increased risk of gastrointestinal illness.
