Description

Fleas are small wingless insects that feed on blood. In Puerto Rico, they are common in homes with pets such as dogs and cats, but they may also affect people when the infestation is high.

Why are they a problem?

• Bites and intense itching.

• In severe infestations, they can affect rest and quality of life.

Where do they hide?

• On pets, especially around the neck, back, and base of the tail.
• In pet bedding, carpets, couches, and floor cracks.

Life cycle

Fleas go through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Many times the problem continues because eggs and pupae remain in the environment and emerge days or weeks later.

Prevention

• Keep pets on veterinarian-recommended flea control.
• Wash pet bedding and textiles frequently.
• Vacuum carpets and furniture regularly.
• Reduce the presence of rodents and stray animals near the home.
