Description
In Puerto Rico, the term “arriero” or “jarriero” is commonly used to refer to the house mouse. It is a small rodent that adapts easily to urban environments and can enter through very small openings in search of food and shelter.
Characteristics
- Small size (7–10 cm not including the tail).
- Gray or light brown color.
- High reproductive capacity.
- Mostly active at night.
Risks
- Contamination of food and surfaces.
- Damage to electrical wiring and structures.
- Risk of rodent-related diseases.
- Fast infestations if not controlled early.
Signs of infestation
- Small dark droppings.
- Noise in walls or ceilings.
- Chewed food or damaged packaging.
- Strong odor in enclosed areas.
Prevention
- Seal cracks and openings smaller than 1/4 inch.
- Store food in airtight containers.
- Keep trash tightly closed.
- Reduce clutter and harborage areas.
